In Las Vegas, nuptials can range from bare bones to over-the-top
The idea that “more is more” certainly rules in Las Vegas, especially when it comes to weddings. In fact, some of the most creative wedding perks can be found at Las Vegas’ hotels, which offer everything from basic, no-frills ceremonies to grand events with “celebrities,” “paparazzi” and even “pirates.” Most have onsite chapels and wedding coordinators, as well as unique venues for nuptials. They also offer creative packages and customized arrangements, ensuring that the sky is almost the limit when it comes to fantasy weddings. The following are some examples.

Making a splash. Couples who exchange vows on the Bellagio’s (888-987-6667, www.bellagio.com) Terrazza di Sogno (Terrace of Dreams), which overlooks the hotel’s Lago di Como (Lake Como) and the Fountains of Bellagio, get a unique send-off: At the exact moment of their first kiss as husband and wife, the Fountains of Bellagio soar skyward.

A royal affair. For couples who want the “royal” treatment, the Excalibur Hotel and Casino (877-750-5464, www.excalibur.com) has an array of 16th-century regal costumes that the bride, groom and wedding guests can rent when booking a wedding at the Canterbury Wedding Chapel. Accessories, including tiaras, crowns and swords, also are available. The bride and groom can be king and queen, prince and princess, or knight and lady; and family and friends are encouraged to dress as the royal court. A minister dressed as Merlin the Magician officiates.

Love is in the cards. The Flamingo Las Vegas (800-933-7993, www.harrahs.com) offers several ceremonies that celebrate the destination and the surrounding areas, including its “Two of a Kind” wedding, which includes, among other perks, a poker lesson for the bride and groom with $100 in chips. The Flamingo will even take couples to the Grand Canyon after the ceremony for a picnic lunch, or arrange a ceremony with cake and champagne in Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire National Park for up to six people.

Matrimony on deck. Couples who want a Paris wedding without leaving the U.S. can tie the knot on the observation deck of Paris Las Vegas’ (877-650-5021, www.harrahs.com) Eiffel Tower, overlooking the Strip. There’s room for the bride, the groom, an officiant and up to 12 additional guests.

No autographs, please. Couples can feel like stars at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino (877-333-9474, www.planethollywoodresort.com) as they walk the red carpet after the ceremony, while “paparazzi” take photos, and “correspondents” interview the wedding guests. A videographer also is on hand, and all footage and images become part of the couple’s wedding folio.

Shipmates for life. At Treasure Island (800-288-7206, www.treasureisland.com), couples can wed on a pirate ship, the Song, which serves as the centerpiece of the hotel’s pirate show, “The Sirens of TI.” A minister dressed in buccaneer attire escorts the bride and groom onto the ship. In addition, the couple can have a pirate swing down from the crow’s nest on cue to hand over the wedding rings. Wedding guests watch from a VIP section.

Grand Canal couples. Couples can wed at The Venetian (888-283-6423, www.venetian.com) in a white-and-gold wedding gondola as a gondolier pilots it along the Grand Canal while serenading them. The gondola accommodates the bride and groom, an officiant and a videographer. Those who want the Grand Canal experience but would rather wed on solid ground can use the Ponte al di Piazza (Bridge over the Square), which the hotel touts as “a stairway to longevity and prosperity as man and wife.”

Star witnesses. Looking for something kitschier? At Madame Tussauds (702-862-7800, www.mtvegas.com) at The Venetian, couples can have their favorite celebrities act as their “witnesses”—sort of. The wax museum’s wedding packages include moving two or more figures to the designated wedding area, known as the Chapel of Dreams. You can have Brad and Angelina as the best man and maid of honor, for example. Or Frank Sinatra can give the bride away. Afterward, the wedding party can “mix and mingle” with more than 100 wax figures and include them in the photography session. They also receive a personal guided tour through the museum.

Hawaii offers many unique venues for couples to tie the knot
Stretches of beach, tropical gardens, manicured lawns, quaint courtyards and other euphoric locales throughout Hawaii make the islands an ideal place to tie the knot. Though most hotels offer at least one of those types of venues, or have access to them, other unique venues—such as historic plantations, waterfalls and even underwater—are plentiful as well. Clients can book these sites through resorts or through professional wedding planners. Here are some examples.

At an aquarium. The Maui Ocean Center (808-270-7081, www.mauioceancenter.com) offers a full range of options, including a ceremony in a 54-foot acrylic tunnel that runs through the 750,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit, where the wedding party is surrounded by stingrays and sharks. If the bride and groom are certified divers, the Maui Ocean Center can customize an underwater wedding. The couple holds “I do” signs, and the rings are kept in a clamshell holder until the vows are exchanged.

At a historic estate. Among the historic estates in the islands where couples can wed is the Bayer Estate on Oahu (808-377-9359, www.bayerestate.com), an oceanfront home from 1936 with a classic garden, located 10 minutes from Waikiki.

Overlooking an ancient Hawaiian fishpond. Hawaiians of long ago developed a way to catch fish for the ali’i (royalty): by trapping them in natural or man-made fishponds along the shores. At the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa (808-886-6789, www.marriott.com) on the Big Island, nuptials can take place on The King’s Knoll, which looks across a fishpond onto Anaeho’omalu Bay.

On a lava rock. At the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa (888-488-3535, www.sheratonkeauhou.com) on the Big Island, couples can celebrate “love on the lava” when they wed on a lava rock fronting the ocean. The Big Island’s Kona Village Resort (800-367-5290, www.konavillage.com) also offers weddings on a lava rock promontory.

At a planetarium. The ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii (808-969-9704, www.imiloahawaii.org) on the Big Island is a full-service venue, home to the 2,400-square-foot Moanahoku (Ocean of Stars) Hall; the Sky Garden Restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls (available Mondays); and outdoor gardens. Couples can also rent the 120-seat planetarium and have their names and images projected onto the 3-D dome screen.

At a plantation. Set on a historic, 27-acre sugar plantation and fronting a black-sand beach, Aston’s Waimea Plantation Cottages (866-774-2924, www.waimea-plantation.com) on Kauai features a restored turn-of-the-20th-century manor that was the plantation manager’s home during the heyday of sugar cane. Also on Kauai, the Kilohana Plantation (808-245-5608, www.kilohanakauai.com) offers a mansion built in 1936 by a sugar baron. The house offers a main salon and a courtyard, where receptions are catered by the onsite Gaylord’s restaurant.

On a ranch. Hawaii is full of ranches, including the Parker Ranch (808-885-5898, www.parkerranch.com) , which was built in 1847 and covers thousands of acres on the Big Island. This working ranch offers several wedding locations, including the 7,000-sqaure-foot Historic Home Puuopelu, Puuopelu Gardens and Mana Hale, the founder’s original home. Oahu’s Kualoa Ranch (808 237-7321, www.kualoa.com) is situated on green cliffs on the northeastern shore, 45 minutes from Waikiki. Amid the ranch’s 4,000 acres are several wedding locations, including a secluded beach and Paliku Gardens at the base of the Kualoa cliffs.

At sea. Hawaii offers plenty of options on the water, including catamarans and luxury yachts. At the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, couples can charter an Ocean Sports Catamaran (888-724-5924 ext. 103, www.hawaiioceansports.com). Trilogy Excursions (888-225-6284, www.sailtrilogy.com), which operates catamaran cruises from Maui and Lanai, offers the “Romantic Catamaran Sunset Sail,” which is ideal for wedding receptions. For a more upscale, intimate experience, contact the Honolulu Sailing Company (800-829-0114, www.honsail.com), which offers private luxury yachts in two locales on Oahu: Kaneohe Bay and Honolulu Harbor.

Next to a waterfall. There are several spots throughout the islands here couples can wed next to one of Hawaii’s storied waterfalls. Surprise! Couple's Wedding Cake Was a Fake

It sounds like a bridezilla's worst nightmare: A Welsh couple found out their wedding cake was a fake made of polystyrene only after trying to cut into it at their reception.

As bride Aimee West told the Daily Mail, "It was a lovely occasion and the ceremony was going to be the icing on the cake -- only there was no cake."

The snafu happened when West discovered four hours before the wedding that bakery Creative Cakes had forgotten to bake her cake. Creative promised to get West a cake in time for the ceremony.

They delivered it later, but it was the bride's mother who discovered the cake was a fake right as the couple was going to cut it.

The Wests, though disappointed, likely had a laugh and moved on with their ceremony. But shortly after their nuptials, they decided to take Creative Cakes to small-claims court to reclaim their deposit and gain compensation for their legal fees.

The court bid was successful, and the Wests were awarded £310 (about $511). The only hiccup seems to be that Creative Cakes maintains that the Wests knew that the cake was going to be a fake. As anyone who's seen "Cake Boss" or "Ace of Cakes" knows, there's no way to bake and ice a cake that big in a few short hours.

Polystyrene cakes, however, are a popular choice to save money -- and a lot of wasted cake -- at receptions nowadays. Why spend a few hundred dollars on something that won't get eaten?

They're known in the baking industry as "dummy cakes," and they can be all Styrofoam or part-cake/part-fake.

When it comes to food, wine and conviviality, the Spanish seem to have it nailed. Nothing better embodies this than the tapas crawl, one of Spain's favorite pastimes. Wandering from bar to bar over the course of an evening, you sample saucer-size portions of food like garlic shrimp, grilled octopus and thin-sliced ham, accompanied by glasses of red wine or sparkling cava. Some of the best tapas bars are in the Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter); arrive early to see the medieval Catedral de la Seu before starting your dining tour.

But it's not all about food here. Park Guell, built by the famed Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, is an unusual 20th-century park that radiates romance. Architectural buffs will also want to visit La Pedrera, another Gaudi gem widely considered one of the most imaginative houses in the history of architecture.

When night falls, ride the old-fashioned tram to Tibidabo, Barcelona's highest hill, and watch the city lights illuminate the sky. Or hit Harlem Jazz Club, where the intimate setting and varied range of local and international acts attracts an eclectic, energetic clientele. After the show, head over to the waterfront and wander the sexy, smoky chirinquitos (beach bars) till the wee hours of the morning.

Stay for dinner at the monument's second-level Jules Verne restaurant.

Be sure to meander through Luxembourg Gardens, adjacent to Luxembourg Palace, and french-kiss on any number of bridges overlooking the Seine — you'll see why it has made so many appearances in Hollywood films. To capture some of that French style, hit the string of department stores on Boulevard Haussmann; you'll find the best deals during the biannual sales in January and July.

Buenos Aires

Though BA faced tough economic times in the 1980s and '90s, it has since rebuilt itself as one of South America's sexiest cities. Would you expect anything less from the country that brought you tango and Evita?

Most of all, Buenos Aires is a city of neighborhoods. Puerto Madero is the newest hot spot, and the Rio de la Plata waterfront bustles with restaurants and clubs that cater to celebrities and trendsetters. Palermo lures 20- and 30-somethings with hip hotels, chic boutiques and hot nightlife. But elegant Recoleta is the city's heart.

From here you can stroll to many historic sites, including Recoleta Cemetery, where Eva Peron is buried, and the balconied Pink Palace, where she gave her stirring "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" speech. La Boca is farther afield, but this colorful barrio is worth the taxi ride for its brightly painted buildings and collection of nattily dressed tango dancers and related memorabilia shops. (The provocative dance got its start in this neighborhood.)

Of course, a city known for tango and wine is bound to have fantastic nightlife. Take a gastronomic tour, dining on grilled meats of every kind (washed down with local malbec, of course) at parrilla joints like Cabana Las Lilas and Sucre. Dinner starts late — think 10 p.m. — which is fine because the best milongas (tango clubs) don't even get started until midnight.

Faena Hotel + Universe Philippe Starck brings his unique whimsy to a historic red-brick granary on the waterfront, with the end result recalling a super-cool movie set. "Universe" refers to all the sexy extras, like the Turkish-style spa, swanky Library Lounge and El Caberet, home to the city's sultriest tango dinner show. From $790.

Palacio Duhau — Park Hyatt Buenos Aires You'd expect accommodations in a palace to be posh; what's unexpected is the modern feel of this gorgeous hotel. 1 The budget

However, we quickly realized that what we wanted was nowhere to be found. Never ones to shy away from taking on a creative project ourselves, we began the process of designing our own wedding invitations. A combination of dark walnut wood, rich brown ink, and a soft green paper was selected for the quickly upcoming winter wedding. Curly willow was the inspiration for the organic design which helped add a wintery feel to the invitations. After some very long hours, the invitations were complete and ready to be mailed. They were a success. The feedback was so positive that we began to ponder over how and if we should make such an invitation available to others. The more we thought about it, the better the idea seemed. Not long after the vows were spoken and the rings were exchanged, Oslo Press Inc. was born.

Who Pays for What During the Wedding

There’s no two ways about it: weddings are expensive. Paying for every detail is enough to drain

any family’s financial coffers and – even worse – leave them wrestling with debt. Especially for new

couples paying their own way during the wedding, the expenses quickly add up.
The following is a traditional guide to dividing expenses equally and fairly among the four major

participants in planning the four main parts of the wedding celebration: rehearsal dinner, ceremony,

reception, and honeymoon. These are guidelines more than rules, and are intended to show tradition more

than carved-in-stone etiquette.

The Bride’s Family

There’s a popular misconception among the unmarried of the world that the bride’s family foots the

entire bill. That’s not entirely true, though unfortunately it may feel that way for the father of the

bride! Traditionally, the bride’s family finances the reception dinner with all its facets: the food,

drink, venue, service staff (including tips), flower arrangements, wedding favors, and any other miscellany.
The bride’s family also pays for many of the necessities leading up to the ceremony: these usually include

the bridal gown, the wedding

invitations and save-the-date reminders, as well as the engagement and wedding photographs.
Finally (!) the wedding ceremony costs, the photographer and videographer fees, the cost of the ring bearer

and flower girl accessories, the transportation costs and bridesmaids bouquets are all picked up by the

bride’s family. Honestly… if you’re the parent of a young girl, start saving right now.

The Bride

Compared to her family, the bride gets off relatively easy. Brides traditionally pay for the

groom’s wedding band, gifts for her

bridesmaids, the bridesmaids’ luncheon, her blood test fees, and the wedding day lingerie. In the

strictest traditional sense, the bride should also pay for her out-of-town bridesmaids accommodations.

The Groom

Okay, guys. Time to pony up. Following the engagement ring (that two-month’s salary guideline is passé, by

the way) you’ve still got a few things left to buy. You’ll pay for the honeymoon, the marriage license, and

gifts for your groomsmen. The gentleman

groom, however, also pays for the bridal bouquet and corsages for your mother and your new mother-in-law.

You’ll also pick up the boutonnieres, ties, and accessories for the groomsmen, and finally the bride’s

wedding ring. Gifts for the ushers and for your parents go the extra distance to showing your class. You

should also pay the honorarium for the judge, justice of the peace, or clergyman who officiates the

ceremony, too.

The Groom’s Family

Besides their own attire, the groom’s family is responsible for the rehearsal dinner and all its

details.

The Maid of Honor

showers are the responsibility of the maid of honor. This includes all the details, top to bottom.

The Best Man

The best man is master of ceremonies and godfather of the bachelor party, from the planning to the

execution to pouring all the guests into cabs at the end of the night. It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got

to do it.

The Groomsmen and Bridesmaids

Most of the attire – for example, the tuxedo rental and costs of the gown – are the responsibility

of the individual wedding party member. They also give a gift to the newlyweds. Groomsmen arriving from

out-of-town are also expected to pay for their accommodations.

How to Use Wedding Cameras On Tables

The wedding plans are coming along smoothly. The bride and groom have decided they would like to place disposable wedding cameras on the tables at their reception. Where can you buy them in bulk? How do you let the guests know about using these cameras? What do you do with them after the wedding reception?

Step 1
Select the style of disposable cameras to fit the wedding. These cameras come in a variety of designs. One source of cameras, Weddings Center (see link in Resources), has cameras decorated with rhinestones, hearts, bells, flowers and much more.

Step 2
Purchase enough cameras for each table at the reception. The amount per table depends upon how many people will be seated at each table. If there isn't going to a sit down meal, purchase enough cameras to place around the reception location. It’s a good idea to purchase extra, in case something happens to one of the cameras.

Step 3
Use the card stock to make signs to place next to the cameras, in the event that the purchased camera do not already come with explanation cards. These cards can be the folding kind that stand alone or a flat card to place under the camera. You can write the instructions by hand or create the design on a computer and print them. On the cards, instruct the guests to use these cameras to take pictures of the reception and to leave them on the table when finished.

Step 4
Place the wedding cameras on each table or around the reception location. Set the cards either next to or under the cameras, depending on the card style. If the reception is outside, it might be a good idea to tape the note to the tablecloth, to keep it from blowing off. Keep the extra cameras handy, in case a camera is accidentally knocked off the table or dropped in the punch bowl.

Step 5
Arrange for someone to pick up the cameras after the reception is over. Tell them where to have them taken for developing, or where to drop them off until the newlyweds return home from their honeymoon.

Shop for Disposable Wedding Cameras

Many people like to put disposable cameras on each table at their wedding receptions. Typically, this is done so that guests can take pictures of each other, you and your new spouse at the reception, and you can add the photos to your wedding album later. It's a great way to get candid photos beyond what your photographer captures that day.

Step 1
Look for a camera or set of cameras that complements your wedding theme. In addition to generic designs, you can shop for cameras that have a wedding theme, a beach theme or decorations of flowers, cherries, stripes or polka dots. Disposable cameras also come in a wide range of solid colors.

Step 2
Decide on the type of film you would like. You can choose from black-and-white or color, along with different film speeds. The speed recommended for general use is 400 speed or higher. If your reception is at night and will be lit with candlelight or other low lighting, factor this into your choice of film speeds.

Step 3
Be sure the camera comes with an automatic flash if your wedding reception is indoors or at night. Some disposable camera flashes have a switch to turn them on. With an automatic flash, however, your guests won't have to think about lighting conditions when taking photos.

Step 4
Choose the number of exposures for your cameras. Think about how many guests you are expecting and how many pictures you would like to receive. Cameras come with a range of exposures from 15 to 27 each.

Step 5
Shop for a certain quantity of cameras. Most couples place one or two cameras on each table. Consider your budget and the number of guests you have seated at each table.

About the Event
Filene’s Basement is known for its bargains on everything from fashions to luggage, but perhaps the store is most famous for its annual Bridal Gown Events when brides-to-be can save hundreds, even thousands of dollars on designer wedding gowns.

The sale is held in selected Filene’s Basement stores once a year (twice a year in Boston). News reports so often compare it to the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain that the event is now officially called the “Running of the Brides®.”

The day of the sale, brides-to-be and their helpers line up early. When the doors open, they run full speed towards the racks. In less than 60 seconds, the racks are stripped bare (store employees have to hold on to the fixtures so they don’t topple). The women grab whatever gowns they can, haul them off to a corner, strip down to their underwear and start trying on dresses. Minutes later the trading begins. Every dress, no matter what size, style or color, gets bartered for another, as each bride tries to find the gown of her dreams at a cut-rate price

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about the "Running of the Brides®."
When did the sale start?
Filene’s Basement has occasionally sold wedding gowns ever since the store first opened in 1909. Through press coverage and letters from customers, we determined that a special one-day wedding gown event was held as early as 1947, although it was probably a little tamer than the sale is today.

How many gowns are there?
Anywhere from 1500 to 3000, depending on the store.
What are the Filene’s Basement prices?
$249, $499 and $699.

What were the original prices?
From $900 to $9,000 plus—Gowns bought from other retailers usually have the original price tags attached, so customers can see the savings instantly.

What labels do you carry?
Filene’s Basement carries some of the most famous labels in the wedding gown industry. Because we sell these gowns at such a huge discount, we have an agreement with our vendors that we will not advertise the names. What we can say, though, is that these are designers and brands you see featured in all the big bridal magazines.

Where does Filene’s Basement get the gowns?
We get them from bridal gown manufacturers and from bridal salons and boutiques. Our buyer has developed great contacts in the wedding gown industry, both in the United States and in Europe. Dresses become available for a variety of reasons -- a cancelled order, a cancelled wedding, a small shop needing to make space for new gowns, samples that were never produced, and so on. When our buyer hears that wedding gowns are available, she travels to the salon or the factory and hand-picks the styles and sizes that brides want.

Do I need to make an appointment? What are the hours of the sale?
No appointments needed—we’re not that formal. Brides-to-be are welcome any time during store hours.
Doors open at 8:00am, but brides-to-be start arriving much earlier. In fact, some brides arrive the day before and bring lawn chairs, sleeping bags, and even pop-up tents. Most brides arrive between 7:00am and 8:00am. The sale continues all day until store closing (which varies by store—store hours are posted under “Store Locator” on this site).

What if running and grabbing is not my idea of fun? What if I have to work and can’t get there till later in the day? Will there still be dresses left after the initial “rush to the racks?”
Yes, there will be plenty left to choose from! When the store opens, the racks get cleared quickly because people take as many as their arms can hold. Not knowing what they’ve grabbed, they quickly relinquish the sizes and styles they don’t want, putting them back on the rack or giving them to empty-handed brides. If a bride gets impatient waiting, we suggest that she and her helpers go have a cup of coffee and come back later–by late morning most of the dresses are back on the racks and you can go through the gowns one by one. Even if you’re not able to come till after work, most of the gowns will still be available. Remember, most of the people in line are helpers, not brides-to-be. For instance in Boston, usually the biggest event, there may be 1000 people in line but only 250 of them are brides-to-be and there are 3000 gowns for sale. The odds are great no matter what time of day you shop.

What happens when the doors open at 8:00am?
Brides-to-be and their helpers run full speed to the racks; they grab as many dresses as their arms will hold. It takes anywhere from sixty seconds to two minutes for the racks to be stripped bare (the record is 37 seconds). Each team stakes out a spot on the selling floor, preferably in front of a mirror and the bride starts trying on dresses. Even though there are fitting rooms available, most brides try on gowns in the aisles. Some women wear sports bras and shorts, others wear the lingerie they plan to wear under the gown.

Should I bring help?
Definitely–your mother, bridal party, a style-savvy friend. You’ll need people to help grab gowns off the racks, make trades with other parties, help you in and out of the dresses, and guard the ones in your “maybe” pile from prowlers. It’s a good idea to have a team “uniform”–something that will help you find each other in the crowd, like wearing the same color shirts or big hats. Some teams get very creative. They print their team name on t-shirts, carry whistles or walkie-talkies, and so on. Some teams have strategy meetings before the sale; one woman created a Power-Point presentation about the dress she wanted and got her team together to watch it.

Why aren’t the dresses organized by size?
1) We don’t want give the first people in line the unfair advantage of taking all of one size.2) Any order we start with would break down as soon as all the gowns come off the racks.

I’ve heard that wedding gowns run small – is that true?
It depends on the maker, but many do run at least a size smaller than the brides regular dress size. Rather than look at the size tags, it’s faster to just ‘eyeball’ it to see if it might fit. It’s rare that any gown is a perfect fit anyway. There will be experts on alterations and cleaning at the event to advise you about what can or cannot be altered or cleaned.

I’ve heard that people trade dresses. How does this work?
Over time, a unique trading strategy has evolved. Any gowns that are rejected by the bride are ‘shopped’ around to the various groups looking for fresh merchandise. This can get complex—one trade could involve multiple transactions. For instance, bride #1 wants a gown that bride #2 has, so she offers a gown in trade;
#2 has her eye on a gown being held by bride #3, so she sends bride #1 to negotiate with bride #3. Got it?
Often you’ll see helpers making their way through the crowd holding signs that read “size 10 – 12 in ivory” or “simple size 20 wanted.”

I’ve heard all kinds of stories about how people behave at this sale—are they true?
This is an emotional purchase so we see a wide range of behaviors. At the start, this event can bring out the worst in shoppers—shoving, elbowing, hoarding, and so on; but eventually it brings out the best. A lot of bonding takes place between the bridal groups. When a bride finds ‘the one,’ everybody in her vicinity stops what they’re doing and applauds. Once, when it was discovered that a bride’s mother couldn’t fly in from Chicago because of bad weather, all the other mothers acted as surrogates and helped her find her wedding gown. Brides-to-be who are shopping alone have met on-line and in line and joined forces and help each other.
The behavior of Bridal Gown Sale customers has been studied by two professors of marketing at Bentley College, near Boston. They have shared their findings in scholarly journals and at academic conferences.

How far do brides travel for this sale?
We’ve talked to brides who traveled from Alaska, the U.K., Switzerland, all over. A group from Fresno, California flew to Boston for the sale after hearing about it from an uncle who lived in Taiwan. The gowns themselves have traveled too. One woman sent 4 dresses to her nieces in Russia; another from Brazil shipped a gown to her future sister-in-law, who loved it.

Are men allowed in the store during the sale?
Sure, if they dare. We’ve seen the occasional brother, male friend, father and even fiancé. There have even been instances of fiancés doing the shopping for their brides-to-be—yikes!

Besides saving money, why go to the sale?
As one bride put it, “if we get a gown here, we can invite twenty more people to the wedding.” Her fiancé had other ideas for the savings, like extending the honeymoon.
And there’s the fun factor – this sale has become part of the wedding planning experience for brides and their helpers. In some families, it’s a long-standing tradition to shop for a wedding gown at this sale. Recently the wedding party of a bride-to-be pitched in to make a memorable weekend out of this event – the team of six plus the bride flew into Boston from Toronto, stayed in a hotel near the store, found her dream dress at the “Running of the Brides®” and celebrated that night at a popular restaurant.

What was the most expensive wedding gown ever sold at the sale?
One was originally priced at $10,000. At the time, the price for gowns at the Filene’s Basement sale was $199, so some lucky bride got the bargain of a lifetime.

What is the most unusual wedding gown sold?
A few stand out. One was custom designed gown and train made of white lambskin. The skirt was gored alternating leather with different patterns of ecru lace. It sold to a bride from Tennessee.
Another was hand-made by the designer for a runway show. The skirt had five layers—one layer was hand painted with flowers and it was sandwiched between two layers with three-dimensional flowers sewn on, underneath, a layer of crinoline, and finally, a layer of lace.
Most recently, a red, white and blue dress hung on the rack most of the day. It got lots of attention because it was so atypical, but no takers. Late in the day a bride-to-be saw it and gasped – she had met her fiancé on the fourth of July and felt sparks fly; the wedding was set for the same date two years later.

Are the dresses returnable?
No, because Filene’s Basement does not carry wedding gowns except for the “Running of the Brides®” sale.

Here is another rental company that I found. This company sounds like the perfect one for the wedding, but I still have one more to search for. Plus it's not going to be my decision! Off the hook!

The company name is Shutterbooth.com. Here's what they say about their company: "ShutterBooth offers an elegant unique photo booth design that is perfect for exceptional events. "

There is one important word that jumps out at me! Do you know what it is? OK, this company for sure is in the running. I checked out their web site and like what I see, now I hope my friend likes it too!

Doing my search for wedding photo booth rentals, I came across this company that states:
"We are the low cost provider of quality photo booths in Central Florida. We pride ourselves on our quality photo booths and their ease of use." They have sample of the photo booth pictures and they offer DVD photos also. One down 2 more to search for. I like to get at least 3 quotes from different vendors before deciding on which one would be right, plus check out there credentials (BBB) and other sources. If you have used this vendor before, please email me with your experience.

"Braiding the Strands"

"Braiding the Strands"... Appears to be three pieces of flowing fabric hanging in the front of the sanctuary... using wedding colors, along with a white strand.... symbolizing Jesus at the center of the marriage. When the couple light the unity candle.... they then braid the strands. They light the candle.... then go to the "strands"... and together, braid the three cords together.

Very simple to do... or I can prepare them for you. Just a suggestion

The orgin of Braiding the Strands:

It is representative of the scripture in Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 The scripture talks about man and woman together are better than alone.... and when Jesus Christ is in the the center of them.... it is many times stronger yet!

"Two are better than one, because they have good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

So the three "cords" are two wedding colors, symbolizing the bride and groom; and the white one, symbolizing Jesus in the midst of them together.

Ok, yesterday after church I was talking to my friend about her wedding and the date being changed. Now mind you she had planned on having her wedding in Oct 2009, changed to April 2010 and now JUNE 2010. She started planning her wedding in Jan 2008! Well, she confirmed her new wedding date with me. She says she just wants to have everything paid for in full before the wedding and this gives her more time to plan and budget. Ok I agree with that. Plus it gives me more time to do more research for her. Our next search is photo booths. She doesn't want one, but TWO. OMG! The search is on for 2 photo booths. Wish me luck, I will report want I find.
